TEEN MAKER PROGRAM

The Open Works Youth Teen Maker Program aims to provide hands-on design and production experience to the next generation of aspiring makers. Through a series of collaborative and independent creative projects, Baltimore high school students will learn how to safely use the technology available here in our state-of-the-art makerspace to develop an idea into a finished product as well as learn the ins and outs of building and managing a sustainable creative practice. Stipend available, participation-based. 

The 2023-2024 Teen Maker Program runs from October until May. Applications due on or before September 25.

FAMILY MAKER SHOP 

Join Open Works for multigenerational workshops at Open Works, learning and creating with different tools and technologies. Child must be accompanied by adult.

Got too much kiddo art on your fridge or coming home from daycare?
 
PUT IT ON A SHIRT!
 
Bring a friend, child, date or buddy for a day of doodling, designing and heat pressing to make custom matching shirts. No experience necessary, feel free to bring preexisting drawings. 
Drawing materials and 2 shirts provided.

Each registration covers two class spots and two shirts.

Cost: $40
Ages: All ages, young people between 0-15 must bring an adult as their second enrollment.

Youth Membership Options

Young makers learning to sew at Open Works

Explorer Passes

Young makers, ages 8–15 can now access Open Works shops with an Explorer Pass. 

  • All young makes must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Young makers ages 8–12 can access the upstairs shops inlcuding sewing (portable sewing machines only), digital textiles, PC and mac labs, and 3D printing.
  • Young makers ages 13–15 can access both upstairs and downstairs as well as use the industrial, Juki sewing machines.
  • Young makers are not permitted to do any machine maintenance.
  • Accompaning adult must sign the youth waiver.
  • Safety certification is required for all young makers.

    Explorer pass: $15/day

    Teen Makers

    Teen makers, ages 16 and up can now become members at Open Works. Teen makers will need to complete of provisional membership by logging 12 hours of supervised time with a sponsor. A sponsor is an adult 21+ who is already certified in the shops the teen would like to use. During provisional time the sponsor is issued the key and there is one key shared between the sponsor and teen. Safety certification courses do count toward those 12 provisional hours.

    Class Policies

    Lateness

    Arrivals 20 minutes late or more will not be admitted into class and registration is not transferable.

    Appropriate & Safe Attire

    To avoid accidents with machinery, please avoid wearing loose clothing, pull back hair and scarves, wear closed-toe shoes.

    Wear a mask covering both your nose and mouth.

    Enrollment

    Open Works must have at least 3 participants enrolled in the class 48 hours prior to start date in order to run the class.

     

    Inclement Weather

    Open Works follows Baltimore City Government schedule for closures. Classes will run according to this schedule unless otherwise informed by Open Works staff.

    Cancellation

    In order to exchange or be reimbursed for class fees, it is your responsibility to notify Open Works at least 24-hours in advance of class start date.
