Open Works
Open Works Weekly 7/9/2021
July is off to an exciting start here at Open Works! Just a little over a week into our relaunch and we’ve had so many new and returning members sign up. Micro-studios are getting snatched up left and right (if you’ve been thinking of picking one up better get on it!!!). We posted a new position we’re looking to fill for a Teen Maker Entrepreneurship Program Facilitator and plans are underway for some primo upgrades to our outdoor space. On top of all that, the sunflowers are looking beautiful. It’s nice to find a few minutes between the heat and the rain to enjoy them. Sign back up today!
We’re still conducting our Welcome Back survey to get a better sense of how you all feel about coming back into a shared workspace. Don’t worry, it’s short, but it’s also really important for us that your feedback is included as we all relearn how to share space.
We thrive because members like Darryl Patterson chose to make Open Works home to their small business, where makers and creative entrepreneurs come together to share space, ideas, and the kinds of production tools usually only accessible to large businesses. Darryl Patterson is owner and principal designer of D. Patterson Design Studio, where he creates limited-edition tabletop, home furnishings and custom furniture. Check out some of these beautiful home furnishings made by D. Patterson Design Studio, and stay tuned as Mr. Patterson has big plans and some fresh ideas for his brand in the coming year.
With dozens of new members signing up since we’ve relaunched our monthly membership it’s a good thing we have plenty of safety certification courses scheduled through the rest of the summer and fall.
Now, just because we’re the ones offering the courses doesn’t mean we’re not still learning too!!! We’ve taken some of those remote learning skills honed over the past year and created the fast-track certification process. This is designed for expert makers looking for a quicker entry into the shops and requires the completion of an online course and quiz before an in-person certification.
We had a really great time quilting with Jeff during a staff pilot for his quilting basics workshop. He had us quilting like pros in no time. The only problem is that the placemats we made look so good, we’re afraid to eat on them. Quilting basics will debut September 18. Sign up early because this workshop is awesome and is sure to be popular!!
Hey, it’s been a while since we’ve seen a lot of you so you might notice a few new things around the workshops, but at least one of those new things is a little harder to spot. Cypress, one of the laser cutters, is sporting an extra 10 watts of power after a recent laser upgrade. Why listen to me tell you about it when I can leave it to Cypress to spell it out for you.
