Open Works
Open Works Weekly 7/30/2021
It is so nice to see a full shop after more than a year of restrictions. We’re not totally out of the woods yet. Cases are up 129% in Baltimore City, so the masks are staying ON for August. We’re grateful for everyone’s patience and cooperation.
Looks like we’re not the only ones getting excited about what our members are accomplishing. Last week Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Mayor Brandon Scott came by to see the amazing work that Global Air Drone Academy is doing. Recognizing the incredible growth of the drone industry along with the abundant educational potential drones provide, the folks at Global Air Media started the Global Air Drone Academy with the mission to prepare underserved youth for ‘STEAM’ (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math) education and entrepreneurship, on a global scale.
They have since reached learners in a dozen different countries through camps and workshops and have been able to continue that reach through the pandemic with drone camp in-a-box and a variety of great online programing.
It’s not just young learners!!! In addition to providing comprehensive aerial imaging service, Global Air Media has training and certification programs for people and businesses looking to enter the industry.
So, there you have it, you can officially run an international business worthy of a visit from City and Federal officials out of the “micro” studios at Open Works.
Fall, in-person workshops are on the schedule!!!
Quilting Basics is a fun and approachable introduction to the rich tradition of quilting! In this one day workshop, our very own Jeff Peck will walk you through the fundamentals of quilt design and construction as you make your very own placemat-sized quilt. Doesn’t that look like fun?!

Upholstery:
Tired of that ripped and coffee-stained cushion on your dining room chair or ottoman? Learn basic skills and techniques of modern upholstery at Open Works to give you the confidence to take on that upholstering project.
This class will go over some history of the upholstery craft and train you to use tools, hardware, foam, fabric and other materials to create a cushion to match your style and comfort. Leave the class with your own upholstered CNC routed footstool (14×10.5×11″). Some onsite fabric options are available; participants are encouraged to bring their own fabric of choice.

Wow, it sure does look hot. If only those two had some way to get out of the sun. Maybe they should think about installing some shade. That way everyone at Open Works could enjoy our beautiful patio, even on sunny afternoons like this one.
Oh, wait, what’s that? A patio canopy is exactly what they’re installing and they’re fabricating the whole aluminum structure in-house? How would someone even start learning how to do that?
Hey, it’s been a while, we should grab a drink and catch up!!!
Our new neighbors at Guilford Hall Brewery have a lovely outdoor space. Come by the brewert on August 13th for a Happy Hour and community meeting. It’ll be a great chance to hear all the latest news about Open Works and get to know some of your fellow members.
5:30-7:30pm, 1611 Guilford Ave (right around the corner from Open Works)
