Open Works
Open Works Weekly 7/2/2021
Well, the first day of our membership relaunch was a little soggy, but at least there were enough breaks in the rain to get out and enjoy our new bench! Even though we’ve been putting a lot of information out about the relaunch and updated policies, with so much changing, we though it might be helpful to give a quick rundown of some of what’s new.
- Simpler, more affordable membership! Pro-membership for $80/mo., Resident-membership $175/mo., day passes just $20.
- Please fill out a contact tracing form (QR code posted at all entrances) AND check in at the front desks when entering the building.
- Until further notice, we WILL require masks to be worn in the building.
- Reservations are no longer required for general shop access and only required for digital fabrication machines and the CNC embroidery machine.
- Our Membership Handbook has been updated to reflect the new membership structure and our Code of Conduct has been updated to reflect our values. Please review both.
- Anyone interested in Open Works can take a tour of the building as part of our community orientation, which will now take place both in-person and online Wednesdays at 11am and Saturdays at 3pm.
- Open Works’ classroom space is available to rent again.
- In person shop safety certification courses are being offered along with fast track pathways for more experienced makers. Read more here and see which one is right for you.

Whew, that was a lot of info up there! Things have changed so much in the past 15 months and sometimes it feels like we’re getting so used to living in unprecedented times that it’s hard to figure out which new normal we’re trying to get back to. We’ve been grateful for, and proud of how this community has come together this year and want to check in and get a sense for how you’re feeling about returning to shared spaces. We’ve prepared a short survey and would really appreciate you taking the time to fill it out.
I mentioned our new bench earlier, but that’s only the beginning. Keep an eye out for some more outdoor updates to our already awesome space. Forgive me if I’m being a little shady with the details, but I don’t want to ruin any surprises. Don’t worry, you know Open Works will always have you covered!!!
Join Made in Baltimore for An Evening in the Garden on July 10. This great event will feature the book release of Recast Your City with author Ilana Preuss. Rumor has it that Open Works is featured quite prominently, so I can’t wait to get my hand on a copy. Additionally, you might run into some familiar faces because there will also be a pop-up makers market with Slay Naturals, Tortuga Kombucha, La Loupe, Maurita’s Essentials, Keppel & Kismet, and Personal Best Ceramics. Register here.
Join our team!!! Open Works seeks a Teen Program Facilitator to lead onsite and/or virtual teen educational programming Teen Maker Entrepreneurship Program for after school for young people ages 16-19, Fall 2020-Spring 2022. Interested candidates should apply by July 18.
Here’s another talented member of the Open Works community!!! If you’re into that mid-century aesthetic, then you’ll love Open Works member Gerry Hurley, of MinMax Design. He is an architect, woodworker, and furniture designer who builds custom cabinetry and furniture. Gary puts bespoke shelving and storage within reach with his SARA wall system by taking advantage of the CNC routing tech at Open Works. Want to learn how it works? Check out our class and safety certification schedule.
Open Works will be closed July 5th. Here is where to see fireworks.
