Open Works
Open Works Weekly 6/4/2021
With monthly memberships resuming July 1st, we wanted to highlight some of what our members have accomplished.
Alisa Brock is owner and operator of Drama MaMa Bookshook, a local stationary company that builds on the spot. You also might recognize her from the laser cutting safety certification video in our hybrid safety certification course. That’s right, she’s so good we put her in charge of teaching you how to use this stuff! Take a look at these beautiful laser cut notebooks and journals. Hear Ms. Brock tell you all about Drama MaMa on her WBAL spot from this past winter. Want to find out how she makes it? The certification class that Alisa helped us out with is the first step!
Our new pricing structure means access to more of what Open Works has to offer for less $$, so what are you going to make?
Wait, I thought you said these were “micro” studios, but it looks like you can fit a whole business there!!
In addition to the biggest 49 square feet that anyone’s ever had the nerve to call micro, for just $175/mo., you get conference room access, dedicated wi-fi, kitchenette access, a mailing address, and we’ll soon be adding a dedicated printer. Now that micro studio rental is available without a pro-membership, Open Works has never been a more flexible place for entrepreneurs. If you want to use the shops, you can add on a monthly membership or just use day passes.
Sign up by June 30th to lock in pre-Covid pricing ($125/mo.) on resident membership for 3 months (July 1-Sept. 30)!!!
Order your concrete casting kit soon so you have it in time for this great hybrid online/on-site workshop Father’s Day weekend.
Join Instructor Kuo Pao Lian and Open Works to explore the joys and techniques of creating vessels with concrete using cups, bowls and other DIY molds. Participants work towards completing at least one finished concrete vessel. Bring your own materials or buy one from our online store.
Sunday, June 20, 2-4pm on Open Works’ Deck, Ages 15+, $20 per person or adult/child pair.
Kuo Pao’s daughter will be teaching a workshop on paper folding an origami fidget at the same time!
Adults and children welcome to join Open Works and youth maker Iva Mei Lian for an in-person, outdoor workshop on the deck to create a beautiful origami fidget using paper and glue. Explore how different folds and connection points create a fun and functional toy.
Sunday, June 20, 2-3pm on Open Works’ Deck, Ages 6+, $10 per person or adult/child pair.
Happy Father’s Day!!!
There are still a few spots open for this week’s sewing safety skill show. If you’ve taken the online class and passed the quiz, sign up here. If not, start today! Learn at your own pace, then come show off your new skills!
Also this week, papercrafting artist Kirby Jay is teaching a workshop on making paper flowers on June 10th at 7 PM! We are so excited to collaborate with her — check out more of her work on her Instagram page here. Just $20, family-friendly. Material kits available on Kirby’s Etsy store (not required for class).
How boring would Open Works be if makers didn’t love to learn? With that curiosity in mind, one fitting way for makers and DIYers to celebrate Pride Month is with acts of learning. The Safe Zone Project has created this great, self-guided course on foundational LGBTQ+ understanding & inclusion. It’s all online and has a flexible fee structure (including a pay what you can option). We encourage all our staff, members, and friends to take it. We’ll even (enthusiastically) print your certificate of completion once you’re done so it looks as good in your space as it does in our Office Manager, Tiersa’s!
