Open Works Weekly 2/5/2021

We have cut over 700 individual desk pieces weighing almost two tons since production started last Monday. That’s a lot of desks! We are planning our first distribution days for next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12 + 13, and we need your help.

We are looking for volunteers to help sand the rough edges, package the parts, and distribute them to school and community sites. Sign up here!

Also, look for a feature on the project TONIGHT on WBAL 5 o’clock news or check out this great piece published in the Baltimore Business Journal yesterday. For all you CNC nerds our there, our friends over at ShopBot also made a neat video about the project on YouTube here.

Want to make your own? We now have a download package with all the files needed to cut and build your own Makers Unite Desk.

Want to support the project in other ways? Please donate a desk, donate a stool, or check out the YouTube assembly video.

Executive Fake Saw Officer Leo Ray is still super-stoked about our new Making in Place Shop Apron Kit! Comes with everything you need to make a handsome denim shop apron in either child or adult size, including laser-cut denim pieces, a pattern, written instructions, AND an awesome YouTube tutorial featuring our very own Ms. Sharmane. We are now shipping and they are going fast — order today!

Open Works’ face shield effort in the spring, Makers Unite Round 1, was just one of over 1,800 grassroots groups worldwide that sprang up to make PPE in response to supply shortages. Together, we made 48 MILLION pieces of protective equipment last year! Open Source Medical Supplies has gathered all of that data and documentation in an amazing new report out on their site now — check it out here.

Recently, Open Works received a generous donation of securities to support our education department in 2021. We now have the infrastructure in place to accept gifts of stock to support our ongoing work to make tools and technology accessible to all. If you would like to arrange a donation of stock, please contact Executive Director Will Holman at will@openworksbmore.com.
