Open Works Weekly 10/30/2020

Since July, we have been busy filming, writing, and editing our new online/hybrid safety certification pathway! We are excited to finally release it today!

The City of Baltimore is still in Phase Two of their COVID-19 reopening plan. During this time, we must cap our shop capacity at 50% to maintain social distancing, which has made it difficult to offer in-person classes.

As an alternative, we are excited to now offer an online hybrid class system so you can earn your safety certifications and get in the shop! Take an online class on your own time (FREE), then enroll for an in-person small group Skill Show class ($55) over on our adult programs page. Once you’ve demonstrated your mastery of the machines, you can use the shops on a day pass anytime!

As of today, all of the online courses are live. The Skill Show sessions are still being scheduled, and we expect them to go live mid-November. In the meantime, go ahead and knock off the online requirements first! This will help us assess demand for Skill Shows and schedule appropriately.

Have questions? Check out our FAQ here or email frontdesk@openworksbmore.com.

Looking for locally-made gifts, Open Works swag, masks, and apparel? We’ve got you covered! With items made by Baltimore producers like SewLab USA, Earth Elements Soapworks, and Greenmount West Power Press, we’ve got something for everyone on your list. We’ll be rolling out new items each week, so bookmark and check back frequently!

We need YOUR help to forecast for 2021! We have been working extra hard this year to adapt to an ever-changing operational environment and make sure we are delivering the critical services you need to succeed. Since 2020 has been so different than any other year we have been operating, we wanted to check in with you and see how you are doing. We need some feedback to figure out what changes are working, what changes are still needed, and how we can best serve you going forward.

Our QR code reference cards are going up in all of the shops! Each code will jump you right to the relevant part of the safety video to get you the help you need. Try it out next time you’re down!

Maker Mart is back! Covid-19 has been a huge challenge, for both us as an organization AND the small businesses and makers that depend on us. With many vending opportunities wiped out this year, we are redoubling out efforts to launch a safe and socially-distanced Maker Mart in our parking lot next month. Sign up to sell today!
