Curious about what makes Open Works such a special place? The incomparable Brandon Soderbergh makes the case in the latest print edition of BmoreArt Journal of Art and Ideas. Learn more about how we pivoted to emergency PPE production, what our members make, and our deep-rooted philosophies around inclusion and equity. bit.ly/OWBmoreArt
We’ve also been featured in two important new academic studies! The Urban Manufacturing Alliance “Makerspaces in Action” highlights COVID-19 responses at makerspaces around the country. Our very own board members, Dr. Ron Williams and Jeff Fuchs have co-authored another report, “A Makerspace’s Rapid Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Case Study of Open Works in Baltimore, Maryland.” This in-depth case study examines how community trust, lean manufacturing techniques, and rapid prototyping helped us churn out over 28,000 face shields in just 3 months.
Cafe space available! Unfortunately, our friends at Greenmount Coffee Lab are converting their operation to wholesale only and are moving out. We are on the hunt for another wonderful, community-oriented operator who is interested in providing coffee and light food to our hungry makers and friendly neighbors. Email Executive Director Will Holman at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested.
Makers Unite update! We have been steadily shipping out rewards packages — unfortunately just intime for a nationwide slowdown in Postal Service. Please tag us on social media when you get yours using the tags #makersunite, #getusppe, and #madeatopenworks. While you’re online, follow us on Instagram at @open_works_bmore.
Make along with us with our ‘Making In Place’ Craft Kits! We’ve designed 6 awesome DIY activities for the junior makers in your life to keep their little hands active over summer break. Each kit includes supplies for six projects to make along with video tutorials available on Youtube.
