Makers Unite! Face Shield Project

In the face of a critical shortage of protective equipment for front line health workers, Open Works has launched a collaborative project to 3D print face shields.

We are using an open-source design developed by Prusa Labs in the Czech Republic to make face shields for health care workers. In combination with lower-grade surgical masks, face shields can provide the CDC-recommended level of protection for health care workers and first responders interacting with suspected COVID-19 carriers.

We The Builders is hosting this build using their collaborative program for part-tracking and file hosting for community builds. Innovation Works is handling interfacing with health care providers, orders, and distribution. Open Works is collecting finished parts, sanitizing, assembling, and packaging them for distribution. All of YOU are powering this project by producing parts at home.

Download instruction sheet.

We are using the We the Builders registration platform to establish a chain of custody for printed parts.  DO NOT just randomly send us parts. We have set up this system to maintain and track both parts AND volunteers, and we really need that data to ensure a clean and safe end product. We the Builders is coding around the clock right now to get this ready, but it is taking a little longer than anticipated, and we didn’t want to leave our loyal printers hanging. Please hit the button above or head over to www.mdmakersunite.com tomorrow to register. The link right now just redirects to We the Builders, but be patient, it will be ready soon.

Share your work on social media using the hashtag #makersunite. We have set up a Slack channel for makers to communicate with one another. Join the discussion #makersunite. Please join and work horizontally to problem-solve, as we won’t be able to answer all of your questions and technical issues.

Keep calm, stay safe, and wash your hands.

Will Holman
OW Executive Director
